Development Nous was commissioned in 2019 by Kainga Ora Homes and Communities  to undertake planning, civil engineering, surveying and landscape architectural services for the Kauri Place project working with Young + Richards Architects as project lead. 

DNL and Y+R worked closely with the Kainga Ora Urban Design panel to design the layout which provided for a concise social and physical layout based around four interconnecting one-way Jointly Owned Access Lots (JOALs) and included two communal open space areas for 40 residential lots.

The approach to the public realm for the scheme was a fundamental element of the overall development to ensure that the resulting layout provided a high-quality, attractive environment for future residents. As well as designing the technical infrastructure works DNL developed a thorough landscape architectural scheme for the development which considered wayfinding, lighting, highly durable and attractive materials and finishes palettes and a detail planting design. The resulting design provided private open space for each residential lot and an integrated public realm environment through the JOAL network connecting two public open spaces. 

The construction of the Kauri Street development was completed mid-2022 and was officially opened by the Prime Minister in August 2022. Delivery of the project design was particularly streamlined due to being able to work closely with the other in-house disciplines that DNL provided for the project and trusted external consultants and contractors.
